I have extensive training in the John Gottman, Phd, research-based approach to adult relationships and family dynamics, and incorporate this with Dr. Susan Johnson's theory on Emotional Focus Therapy. I believe there is not a single approach to therapy, but a blend of proven techniques.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is my choice when dealing with issues of anxiety, depression, hopelessness, shame, anger, and worry. CBT is the most studied and proven method of therapy in the psychology world. Started by Aaron Beck in the 1950's, the application of this theory continues to improve.
For trauma clients, I am trained in the use of EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). I find it helps clients move through distress or dysfunction caused by past experiences quicker than talk therapy. EMDR is a fairly new method, developed by Virginia Sharpio, and is developing a proven track record.
About DeeAnn:
Thank you for visiting my website. I am confident we can develop a supportive and nurturing relationship that will achieve your goals. On any given day, I may work with clients dealing with tightness in their chest, someone with difficulty sleeping, a child exhibiting destructive behavior and doing poorly at school, a couple dealing with infidelity or lack of communication, or a male navigating a life transition, just to name a few.
Each of my clients is special and has come with different needs and goals. I use my expertise to tailor my approach. I will do the same for you. How do I help a variety of clients with diverse needs? I continue to read the latest research, seek further education and consult with peers.
As for children, I use CBT, play therapy, arts and crafts, and bibliography. I may play a game that deals with anger, or I may have them draw or work out a puzzle. I use whatever method they enjoy to address their needs without them realizing they are learning new methods to cope.
Before starting my private practice, I gained experience at Austin Child Guidance, Downtown Community Court, Gardner Betts Facility, Samaritan Center, and Austin Police Department. I graduated from St. Edward's University with a Masters in Individual and Family Counseling. My undergraduate is from the University of Minnesota in Business.
I am married and have two grown children, one adopted. Besides working with people, I sing in a choir, learning piano, enjoy physical workouts, biking and am learning to draw. I hope to hear from you soon.
